Case Study : Digital Travel
A digital passport (officially called a Digital Travel Credential, or DTC) is the next evolution of digitally enabled travel.
Currently under development by governments around the world and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), digital passports will be a digital version of a physical passport, which can be securely stored on a mobile device, such as smart phone.
To ensure digital passports have not been tampered with they will be electronically authenticated with the same high level of security used for physical passports today.
This will allow travellers to securely share their digital identity information with border authorities and travel providers from their smart device, even before they have left their home.
This enables security checks to be completed in advance of travel, eliminating the need for lengthy queues and inspections on arrival at a destination.
A quick biometric check to match a travellers real face, to the image shared from their digital passport is all that will be required at the border to confirm a traveller is who they claim to be.
Digital passports could also be used to efficiently book travel, check in at hotels, or confirm a drivers identify when hiring a car, enabling a more efficient end-to-end traveller experience.
